Know your cover

What is heating engineer insurance?

Heating work combines gas or oil, water and other people’s homes, usually in winter when you’re busiest and least able to turn work down. What you install keeps running long after you’ve gone, and so does your responsibility for it, whether you’re on your own or running a team. Cover for it comes as a commercial combined policy: property, liability and business interruption in one, with fleet alongside, sized to what you actually run.

Work that keeps running

A boiler you commissioned stays yours in liability terms long after the invoice cleared.

The people doing the work

Your own engineers and any subcontractors you bring in. Both have to be declared.

The days you can’t work

If your stores is out of action in the middle of winter, that’s the worst possible timing.

Who it’s for

Whatever you’re registered for.

✓

Sole trader heating engineers

One van, domestic servicing and installation.

✓

Gas Safe registered installers

Boiler installation, servicing and repair.

✓

Oil & LPG engineers

OFTEC work and rural installations.

✓

Commercial heating contractors

Plant rooms, commercial boilers and larger systems.

✓

Renewables installers

Heat pumps, solar thermal and lower-carbon systems.

✓

Firms with a stores unit

Boiler and parts stock, engineers loading out daily.

What we cover

Cover built around the way you work.

We get to know how you actually run before we build anything around it.

Public liability

Injury or damage arising from your work, including after you’ve commissioned and left.

Employers’ liability

A legal requirement from your first engineer onwards.

Premises & contents

The stores, unit or office you work out of, and everything in it.

Business interruption

If your stores is out of action mid-winter, that hurts. This covers the trading you lose.

Stock & materials

Boilers, parts and materials in the stores or the van.

Tools, plant & equipment

Flue gas analysers, power tools and equipment, in the van or on site.

Legal expenses

Contract disputes, employment matters and the cost of defending a claim.

Fleet

Vans on one fleet policy alongside the main cover.

Cyber & data

A payment diverted to someone posing as a subcontractor, and an attack on the office systems that hold your contracts and payroll.

Who this cover tends to suit.

This cover is generally bought by heating engineers at any size, from a sole trader with one van to a firm with a stores unit and engineers. Not every part will apply to every business, so tell us how you’re set up and we’ll show you what’s relevant rather than sell you cover you don’t need.

Worth knowing

Check the details before you choose.

Registration matters

Gas Safe, OFTEC or MCS registration affects how the risk is viewed.

Work that keeps running

A commissioning fault can surface a long time after the job.

Hot works

Soldering and brazing gets looked at more closely.

Renewables work

Heat pumps and solar thermal are newer and often assessed separately.

Every system is different.

A domestic combi swap and a commercial plant room don’t carry the same risk. We ask different questions, and we’ll quote both.

04

We present the risk right

What the review covers

  • Gas Safe, OFTEC or MCS registration shapes what insurers will write and on what terms, so tell us what you hold.

  • Heat pumps and solar thermal are newer work that insurers often assess separately from standard heating installation.

  • We approach insurers on our panel who write heating engineer risks, and come back with what they’ll offer.

  • We explain each option in plain English, including what it doesn’t cover.

  • If it’s not a risk we can place, we’ll tell you straight away rather than leave you waiting.

  • No obligation to switch. You decide what fits.
