Know your cover
What is food shop insurance?
Food retail has one exposure that dominates the others: temperature. A chiller or freezer failure destroys stock without breaking anything, and it frequently happens overnight or over a weekend when nobody is there to see it. The second exposure is what happens after the sale, because a business selling food to eat carries products liability whether it made the item or bought it in. Cover is built around premises and stock, with deterioration and products liability alongside.
It covers the stock
What is in the shop, the chiller and the freezer, and what is in preparation.
It covers the temperature
Stock deterioration after a refrigeration or power failure, which stock cover alone does not answer.
It covers what you sold
Products liability responds to illness or injury caused by food that left your counter.
Who it’s for
Whatever you sell.
✓
Butchers
Preparation on site, cold storage, and equipment that is dangerous by design.
✓
Bakers
Ovens and a fire exposure, plus early starts and same-day stock.
✓
Delicatessens and farm shops
Bought-in and prepared lines side by side, and often a seating area.
✓
Greengrocers
Fast-turning perishable stock with an outside display.
✓
Fishmongers
Ice, water and the shortest shelf life in food retail.
✓
Shops with a food-to-go counter
Preparation for immediate consumption, which changes the liability picture.
What we cover
Cover built around your counter.
We ask what you sell, what you prepare and what refrigeration you run before we approach anyone. Then show you what’s available, and you decide what fits.
Premises & shopfront
The structure if you own it, the glazing, the counters and the fit-out behind them.
Stock deterioration
Chilled and frozen stock lost when refrigeration or the power fails, including over a weekend.
Stock
Everything on display, in the cold store and in preparation, at the value you hold.
Products liability
Illness or injury caused by food that left your counter, whether you made it or bought it in.
Public liability
A customer injured in the shop, and injury or damage at a market stall or on a delivery round.
Machinery & equipment
Ovens, slicers, mincers, chillers and the plant the shop cannot trade without.
Employers’ liability
Required by law from your first employee, including anyone working with blades or ovens.
Business interruption
The trade lost while the shop cannot open, including a closure ordered rather than caused by damage.
Cyber & data
The till, the orders, and the card payments that stop when the system does.
Who this cover tends to suit.
This cover is generally bought by food retailers preparing or selling food to eat, from a single butcher’s shop to a business with a shop, a production kitchen and a delivery round. Not every part will apply to every business, so tell us how you’re set up and we’ll show you what’s relevant.
Worth knowing
Check the details before you choose.
Deterioration is not part of stock cover
Stock insurance answers damage and theft. Food ruined by a chiller that simply stopped needs its own section, and it is the claim this trade makes most.
The conditions are about maintenance
Deterioration cover commonly requires servicing records and sometimes a temperature alarm. Worth knowing what yours asks for before a weekend failure rather than after.
Closure by order is a separate cover
Being told to close after a contamination incident is not damage, so it is answered by its own extension rather than by standard business interruption.
Machinery breakdown is usually an addition
An oven or a slicer failing is a breakdown rather than damage, and standard cover does not reach it. Tell us what plant you depend on.
Every counter is different.
A bakery and a fishmonger don’t carry the same risk, so we ask different questions for each.

Why Vara
Bespoke service for you & your business,
without the big-firm minimum.
01
Deterioration comes first
It is the claim this trade makes, and it is the section a general shop policy leaves out. We raise it before anything else.
02
The plant list gets written down
Ovens, chillers, slicers and cold stores. We list what the business cannot trade without, because breakdown is a separate cover from damage.
03
Products liability is not optional here
Selling food to eat puts you in the chain whether you made it or not. We make sure it is there and sized sensibly.
04
We present the risk right
What you prepare, what refrigeration you run, staff and claims history. How it’s framed changes what you pay.
You talk to a person. The machines do the typing.
Free review of your food retail cover and costs.
On a policy that ignores the cold store? Leave your details and we’ll call you straight back. One conversation covers the lot.
What the review covers
Food ruined by a chiller or freezer failure is a deterioration claim, not a theft or damage one — the two sit in different sections of a policy.
Being told to close after a contamination incident is usually answered by its own closure-by-order extension, not standard business interruption.
We approach insurers on our panel who write food retail risks, and come back with what they’ll offer.
We explain each option in plain English, including what it doesn’t cover.
If it’s not a risk we can place, we’ll tell you straight away rather than leave you waiting.
No obligation to switch. You decide what fits.
