Know your cover

What is florist insurance?

A florist trades on two things a normal shop does not have to think about: stock that is worthless within a week, and orders tied to a specific day. A chiller failure destroys the first. A van breaking down on a Saturday morning destroys the second, and a wedding cannot be moved to suit. Cover is built around the premises and perishable stock, with delivery, event work and business interruption alongside.

It covers the stock

Cut flowers, plants and sundries, and the chiller and workroom they depend on.

It covers the deterioration

Stock lost when the chiller or the power fails, which stock cover alone does not answer.

It does not cover a missed date

Failing to deliver on time is a contract question rather than an insured loss, unless the cause was itself insured.

Who it’s for

Whatever you arrange.

✓

High-street florists

Shop trade, local delivery and a workroom behind the counter.

✓

Wedding and event florists

Large single orders on immovable dates, often installed on site.

✓

Funeral specialists

Short notice, exact requirements and no scope for a second attempt.

✓

Studio and online florists

No shop front, but stock, a workroom and a courier relationship.

✓

Contract and corporate florists

Regular installations in offices, hotels and venues.

✓

Florists with a delivery fleet

Own vehicles, which brings motor and transit questions with them.

What we cover

Cover built around your orders.

We ask what you sell, what events you take on and how you deliver before we approach anyone. Then show you what’s available, and you decide what fits.

Stock

Cut flowers, plants, containers and sundries, valued at what you hold in a peak week.

Stock deterioration

Flowers lost when the chiller or the power fails, which is the claim this trade makes.

Premises & workroom

The shop, the glazing, the chiller, the workroom and the fit-out.

Goods in transit

Arrangements on the way to a customer, a venue or a funeral, in your van or a courier’s.

Public liability

Injury or damage in the shop, and at a venue while you are installing.

Event installations

Arches, structures and displays you build at a venue, and the damage they can cause.

Business interruption

The trade lost while the shop or the workroom cannot operate, including through a peak.

Employers’ liability

Required by law from your first employee, including casual help at peak weeks.

Cyber & data

Orders, delivery addresses and the card payments taken online and in the shop.

Who this cover tends to suit.

This cover is generally bought by florists, from a single high-street shop to a studio doing weddings and corporate contracts. Not every part will apply to every business, so tell us how you’re set up and we’ll show you what’s relevant.

Worth knowing

Check the details before you choose.

Deterioration is the claim

Stock cover answers damage and theft. Flowers ruined by a chiller that stopped is a separate section, and for a florist it is the important one.

Peaks are extreme in this trade

The stock held in the days before a peak can be several times a normal week. Insure the peak, not the average, or a claim can be reduced in proportion.

Event installation is a different liability

Building a structure at a venue is not shop trading. If it falls or marks a floor, that is your liability on somebody else’s premises.

A missed date is usually a contract matter

Insurance answers insured causes. If the reason you missed a wedding was itself covered, the loss may follow; if it was a supplier letting you down, that is a contract question.

Every order is different.

A hand-tied bouquet and a church installation don’t carry the same risk, so we ask different questions for each.

Why Vara

Bespoke service for you & your business,
without the big-firm minimum.

01

Deterioration comes first

Flowers are worthless within days, so a chiller that stops is the loss rather than a fire. We raise it before anything else.

02

Peak stock is what gets insured

We ask what you hold in your busiest week, not across the year, because that is the figure a claim is measured against.

03

Event work gets declared

Installing at a venue is a different liability from selling over a counter. We describe both rather than call you a shop.

04

We present the risk right

Stock peaks, event work, delivery, staff and claims history. How it’s framed changes what you pay.

You talk to a person. The machines do the typing.

What the review covers

  • Standard stock cover answers damage and theft, but flowers ruined by a chiller that stopped sits in a separate deterioration section, and for a florist that’s the important one.

  • The stock held in the days before a wedding or a peak can run several times a normal week, so insuring the peak rather than the average is worth checking.

  • We approach insurers on our panel who write florist risks, and come back with what they’ll offer.

  • We explain each option in plain English, including what it doesn’t cover.

  • If it’s not a risk we can place, we’ll tell you straight away rather than leave you waiting.

  • No obligation to switch. You decide what fits.
