About Vara.
We take our name from Vár, the Norse guardian of oaths — the figure who witnessed the promises people made to one another, and held them to what they had said.
Insurance is a promise.
Everything else — the questions, the panel, the recommendation in writing — exists to make sure it is one you can rely on.
What we do
A broker, not a portal.
Vara is a commercial insurance broker. We arrange cover for businesses — the liability, property, stock, equipment and interruption risks that come with actually trading — and we advise you on what you need before you buy it.
That starts with a conversation rather than a form. You explain what the business does, and we ask the questions your sector’s insurers will ask. Then we go to our panel, come back with a recommendation, and set out in writing why we think it fits — including what it does not cover.
How we work
One conversation, then advice.
Most business insurance is sold by form. You pick the closest trade from a list, a price comes back, and nobody has asked whether the cover behind it matches what you actually do.
We work the other way round. A named broker takes the detail once, prepares the risk properly before going to market, and stays with it — so when you call back, you are speaking to the person who arranged it.
Our technology does the re-keying and the form-filling, which is why you are not waiting on paperwork. It does not do the advising.

Why we built it
Bespoke service, without the big-firm minimum.
Properly brokered insurance has usually come with a minimum premium. Above it, a business gets a named broker, a prepared submission and an underwriter who has actually read the risk. Below it, the same business gets a call centre or a comparison site.
We do not think the quality of the advice should depend on the size of the premium. The preparation that makes a risk clear to an underwriter is largely work that can be done well at any size — so we do it at any size.
How we advise
On a panel, and we say so.
We advise on the basis of a limited panel of insurers and underwriting agencies, rather than a fair analysis of every contract available on the market. That is a real limit on our advice, and we would rather you heard it from us than found it in the small print.

How we are paid
Commission, said out loud.
The cover and cost review is free, and there is no obligation at the end of it. If you take a policy through us, we are paid commission by the insurer — and we will tell you that before you commit to anything, not after.
The full basis on which we advise, and how we are paid for it, is set out in our terms of business. The decision to buy is always yours.
